12′ Ceilings Are High

I didn’t realize how tall 12 foot ceilings are until I walked around the guest house today (since it now has trusses it’s easy to gauge). They are pretty high up there.
The nice thing about it is we can setup some interesting stuff indoors… like a climbing wall, base jumping, hang gliding indoors, etc.

Canon VB-50i PHP Control Class

I tried to find a PHP class to control the new camera, and I couldn’t find one… so a little packet sniffing later, I was able to figure out how it’s little Java applet communicates with the camera. Anyway, I spent a few minutes to make a PHP class to control the camera, so […]

Correction And Apology

On August 25, 2006, I published some information that turned out to be entirely false. I sincerely apologize to those of you that I inadvertently mislead with this post.
In that entry, I stated that I didn’t get stitches from my surgery. But new information has come to light this morning that now leads […]

…Unless It’s Night Time

It doesn’t work so well inside a dome at night with the infrared illuminator on.

If 2Wire’s crappy router would let me remotely configure it, maybe I could open up the ports on the firewall so I could get into the camera configuration…. but no, I have to drive there. So dumb.

Camera Works

The webcam at the job site is now live… After spending about 2 hours wrestling with 2Wire’s lameness (I need to screw around with it more to see if I can get it configured better).

Gmail Spam Filtering Isn’t So Hot

In theory, Gmail’s spam filtering is supposed to get smarter as you “train” it by tagging spam emails that slipped through their spam filters. I’ve been anal about going through every single email and tagging every spam email as such in the hopes that it would get smarter. In reality, I think it […]

I Almost Have The Camera Live

It’s mounted on a pole, it’s had Internet connectivity to the site since Thursday, it’s been plugged in since Friday and I was planning on hooking up the Ethernet cable and configuring it on Friday, but I was too tore up to leave my home.
Figuring I would do it today, I went to the site […]

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Thank God for this game because it is an utter time waster and I’ve had to lay around doing nothing the last few days. I don’t really like RPG games, but I got it for my Xbox 360 because it was the highest rated game for it, and there really wasn’t any games I […]

Dude, Where’s My Car?

I’m not really one to complain (that often), but why in the hell does it take so long to build an f’ing car??? It’s now been over 3 months since my car was stolen, and I ordered a new one 1 week after it was stolen (before the insurance company considered it a loss […]

DynDNS for 2Wire Products?

Anyone know of some super awesome secret way to make a 2Wire Internet gateway also act as a dynamic DNS client? Since it’s a FTTP (fiber to the premises) gateway and not a “normal” DSL modem, I’m pretty sure I can’t just swap it out with something else that supports DynDNS.
The little I poked […]

I’m Free, I’m Free!

Okay not really, but I did get out of my home for the first time since Thursday today (because of my surgery). It was also the first day I was able to shave and take a shower.
It still hurts to do much beyond laying in bed/on couch though.

My Guts Hurt

Don’t know what else to say about it… that’s it.

Friday, August 25th, 2006Friday, August 25th, 2006

No Stitches

I changed my little bandage thing today and uhm… I have no stitches. I have a 3 inch incision in my abdomen and I have no stitches. Does anyone besides me think that’s a little weird? What if my guts came spilling out or something if I cough too hard? […]

Vicodin Doesn’t Do Shit

I ended up taking 4 Vicodin last night, and it doesn’t do a God damn thing for me except make me feel like I’m about to puke. Certainly didn’t help with the pain.
So I don’t think I’m going to take anymore pain killers. Which I guess is a moot point because as long […]

I Was Stabbed

I had my incisional hernia repair surgery today, and it was quick and easy…
But now after the surgery, it straight up feels like I was stabbed with an 8″ blade in my gut, and then someone jammed it around in there just for good measure. Thank God I waited until after Costa Rica to […]

AT&T U-Verse Is Going To Be Rad

I was talking to the SBC/AT&T guys that installed the Internet connectivity at the job site today and having fiber to the door is going to have some really cool advantages early next year (right now they just run phone and 6Mbps Internet across it). At that point the “standard” Internet connectivity on it […]

I Have A Wikipedia Entry

I forgot that my mom mentioned a few weeks ago that I have a Wikipedia entry (you know how parents are, always searching for this kids or something).
Obviously it was spawned from the Wired Magazine article, but it still would be interesting to know who started it.

Royal Flush

Played a little Texas Holdem poker last night, and I got a pretty decent hand… A royal flush.
But here’s the crazy part… a few hands later I got a straight flush (king high). Both hands were diamonds too.
More importantly, I have witnesses! hah
Too bad I lost overall for the night… […]

AT&T U-Verse

My new place has fiber to the door, so there’s some bad news, and some great news to go along with that. The bad news is that I can’t get DSL. The great news is I can get something way better and cheaper (6Mbit connectivity over fiber for $27/month).
If all goes well, we […]

Moving HTML With JavaScript

Someone asked me why I hide the sidebar on this blog by default, then show it in a different part of the HTML, so here’s the explanation…
Most blog themes float the main body to the left, and make the sidebar on the right “static”. I did the opposite when creating my custom WordPress theme… […]

Everyone Wants My Blood

I’ve had to give lots of blood lately. 2 vials were taken before I went to Costa Rica, a stone wall took some of my blood in Costa Rica, and then someone else wanted 1 vial of blood today.
Too bad we haven’t perfected human cloning yet. Then I could have myself cloned and […]

Guest House Foundation

Went up to the site today to see what’s been going on in the last 2 weeks (since I’ve been gone), and it looks like lots of stuff has been happening…

Guest house/garage has it’s concrete slab poured
Basement looks like it’s just about ready to have it’s slab poured
Framing of the guest house has started (2 […]

Borat - Dating Service

Would any ladies out there like a date with Borat?

Mexican Triangles

Dude, I totally forgot… a little tidbit from SES for ya…
Next time anyone sees David Naylor, ask him if he would like to join you for some Mexican triangles.

Local Party In San Jose

Okay, we are back in San Jose now since our flight home leaves in the morning. Scott’s friend Tracy is currently staying in San Jose on a student exchange program, so we got a couple taxis over to the party.
As you can see from he picture, it was a wild and crazy time. […]

Arenal Volcano Eruption

So while eating dinner, (a 14 ounce, $8 filet mignon), the volcano was erupting. So we ended up seeing lava streaming down the volcano tonight. Not sure if it was happening during the day or not, but definitely could see the lava glowing at night.
Unfortunately no one has a good enough camera to […]

Arenal Volcano

Scott, Jessica and I decided to hike around the base of the Arenal volcano this afternoon. It was pouring like a mother BTW.

La Fortuna Waterfall

We hiked down to the La Fortuna waterfall this morning… a pretty cool little hideaway in the jungle. (How do you like my awesome Google Dance shirt I got from SES?)

Tabacón

Tabacón resort is pretty nice and we’ll be staying here for 2 nights. Lots to do and a really neat maze of hot springs fed by the Arenal volcano.
Too bad their tech guys don’t know anything about computers or the Internet. One guy actually came to my room, and looked at my laptop […]

Coati

These things are kind of weird… like a cross between a raccoon and an opossum…

Property In Playa Hermosa

Anne’s aunt is a real estate agent and lives in Playa Hermosa, so we went to check out a house she was selling. A pretty nice place with a decent (hah) view… I think it was around 4,500 square feet and rents as a vacation rental for $5,000/week. It’s currently on the market […]

Snorkeling In Playa Hermosa

In a little hotel we found down a dirt alley in Playa Hermosa today (it’s actually a really nice place right on the beach) and we went on a 3 hour snorkeling tour for $20 (gotta love how cheap Costa Rica is… our hotel worked out to $19 per night, per person… including an awesome […]

Jacó, Costa Rica

Avoid this crappy town like the plague. We drove through it on our way to Playa Hermosa, and someone came up and stabbed our tire while we were sitting in the car.
As Julien would say, “Thank you very much! We really appreciate it!” (you have to smile and wave to get the full […]

Salsa

At dinner in Manuel Antonio, you could find Celeste enjoying a nice bowl of salsa.

This may actually be the best picture of the trip. hah

Nap Time

Can I take a nap please? Thanks…

This thing was trying to eat us while we were sleeping (they are all over the place)…

Zipline Tour In Manuel Antonio

Went on a zipline tour today… it wasn’t half as fun as the one I went on a couple years ago, but whatever… it was still a blast.

Three-Toed Sloth

We are staying in Manuel Antonio (at the Costa Verde hotel) for 2 nights (last night was our first night), and we woke up, and check out what was outside our hotel window (this a picture from our room)… A three-toed sloth. Cool.

BTW, my head still has a knot in it.

Cracked My Head

If anyone wants to know an easy way to bust your head open in a split second, just slip off the road into a concrete and stone wall. Your head doesn’t stand much of a chance, and it will bleed right away so you can look cool.
Another pretty awesome thing about it is that […]

Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica

We made it to our first (real) destination in Costa Rica!!! We found a hotel (Costa Verde) and headed to the beach. 2 for 1 beers and mixed drinks! Yay!

Crocodiles

Somewhere between David Hasslehoff’s favorite cafe and Manuel Antonio, we came across a bridge that had all sorts of crocodiles under it. Thankfully, there was a little shop that sold ice cream Trits (BTW, these things are f’ing good), so we could eat them while we stare at the crocodiles.

The Hoff Man In Costa Rica

On the first (real) day of our Costa Rica trip, we stopped at a cafe on the way to Manuel Antonio… and guess who was here? None other than David Hasselhoff himself!

There was also some crazy spider at this cafe that Scott got an amazing picture of…

Gran Hotel, Costa Rica

We made it to Costa Rica, and we are staying in the “historic” Gran Hotel in San Jose. It was supposed to be 1.5 miles from the airport, but it’s more like 15 miles. Kind of screws up our rental car situation on the last day, but whatever… They have free Internet […]

…and SDG&E said, Let There Be Power.

Got word from Mike today that we officially have power at the site now. Someone must have read my plea.

Search Engine Strategies, San Jose

This was the first time I ever went to a SES show and it was quite a bit bigger than I thought they were. Attendance was probably ~5,000 people or so. The really interesting thing though is all the parties… enough parties that you end up missing half the show because you are […]

Airport Wait Times

Okay, so there was that terrorist thing going on today, so the airports were all whacked out… or at least they were supposed to be. Everyone at SES was like, “Dude, you only have 4 hours before your flight, and the airport is an hour away, you better leave now… Actually, you probably aren’t […]

I’m Really An Indian Now

So I’ve been wearing this Indian dress pajama thing for a few days now, and I’m starting to feel more and more Indian… so I took another picture so you guys can tell me what you think.

Actually it was Photoshopped (hah, really??) by a couple of Digital Point users, but it turned […]

Floating Bed

Check this bed out… it’s pretty pimp.
A young Dutch architect has created a floating bed which hovers above the ground through magnetic force and comes with a price tag of 1.2 million euros ($1.54 million).

I’m An Indian

I actually was born on an Indian reservation (which is true BTW), but that’s not the kind of Indian I’m talking about. Today I decided to try out being something other than an American. Today, I’m an Indian. I don’t speak Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati or any of the other dialects over in […]

How To Crack 128-bit Wireless Networks In 60 Seconds

Just for fun (since I’m a dork), I was looking for a wireless stumbler for Macintosh that supported a GPS unit because I thought it would be interesting to map how many wireless networks there are in my neighborhood (I usually can see 15-30 unique wireless networks from any given point). In my search, […]

SDG&E Digital Meters

So I was checking out some of the stuff that should be installed soon at the construction site (most notably electricity). I guess SDG&E is going to be putting in a digital electric meter vs. the “old school” mechanical type.
I Googled around a bit to find out what’s up with them… I guess they […]

Download Meet The Fockers Via BitTorrent

You may or may not know, the MPAA and BitTorrent “joined forces to protect film copyrights” (the MPAA’s words, not mine) last November (see press release).

Search for Torrent Files

From Bram Cohen (BitTorrent CEO):
“BitTorrent, Inc. discourages the use of its technology for distributing films without a license to do so. As such, we […]

BabbFest Fires

Okay, I got some pictures of the fires from the surrounding areas of BabbFest from Alison… It started in Glacier National Park by a group of boy scouts. Hopefully they take away their fire safety badges.

San Diego Padres Win

I’m not a big fan of baseball, but I *love* the Padres dugout seats when I can get my hands on them, so I went to the game today.
This is the 3rd time I’ve had those tickets this year, and the Padres have won every time. Maybe they should just give me those tickets […]

New Domain

Well, I decided to switch my personal blog to it’s own domain (shawnhogan.com in case you didn’t notice), since the new address is easier to remember. So uhm… yeah. That’s the new URL.
UpdateOkay, the old URLs properly redirect to the new ones, the photo gallery works and I updated all […]

Xbox 360

Oh, I forgot to mention that 2 weeks ago when it was scorching hot, it was too hot to go outside, so I was stuck in my place and was really, REALLY bored. So I went out and bought an Xbox 360. Unfortunately there’s still no games that I was terribly interested in […]

Funding A Movie

Here’s something kind of funny/ironic with the whole MPAA thing going on…
I got a proposal in the mail today from a film production company that wants me to invest/fund their movie for a 14% return on the investment plus title of “Executive Producer” on the movie.
“Based on those factors, it should receive a PG-13 rating […]

MySQL 5.0.23?

MySQL is working on version 5.0.25 already. 5.0.23 was never released, and 5.0.24 was released on July 27, 2006.
So if 5.0.24 was released, where the hell is it? (it’s not on the download page)
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/news-5-0-x.html
5.0.23 has a couple key bug fixes in it that I’ve been itching to get my hands […]
